Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga Yoga is a system of Yoga recorded by the sage Vamana Rishi in the Yoga Korunta, an ancient manuscript "said to contain lists of many different groupings of asanas, as well as highly original teachings on vinyasa, drishti, bandhas, mudras, and philosophy" (Jois 2002 xv). The text of the Yoga Korunta "was imparted to Sri T. Krishnamacharya in the early 1900's by his Guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari, and was later passed down to Pattabhi Jois during the duration of his studies with Krishnamacharya, beginning in 1927" ("Ashtanga Yoga"). Since 1948, Pattabhi Jois has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga from his yoga shala, the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute (Jois 2002 xvi), according to the sacred tradition of Guru Parampara [disciplic succession] (Jois 2003 12).

Ashtanga Yoga literally means "eight-limbed yoga," as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the Universal Self consists of the following eight spiritual practices:

Yama [moral codes]
Niyama [self-purification and study]
Asana [posture]
Pranayama [breath control]
Pratyahara [sense control]
Dharana [concentration]
Dhyana [meditation]
Samadhi [contemplation]

Children's Yoga

Beneficial yet Fun
These are the two words to describe Children’s yoga, where your child will be taught to exercise, relax and focus the healthy and natural way. With regular practice, expect to see increased muscular strength, higher self-esteem, improved learning and social skills and fortified mind-body-spirit connection.

Since yoga uses deep relaxations and breath meditations to increase concentration power, yoga is especially useful for children with Attention Deficit Disorder and Autism. Even if your offspring has no such problems, his/her health and well-being can still be greatly improved by yoga with a sense of freedom, playfulness and imagination.

Coming soon, please submit your preferred timing Sunday morning, Saturday morning, Wed evening 5-6:00 pm. A minimum number requirement is needed before classes can commence. Please register your interest.
Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga was re-created from even older traditions by the Nath Yogis of Northern India over 1000 years ago.

These Yogis viewed the body both as an expression and as a way of integrating the polarities of existence. ‘Ha' refers to the energy of the solar, the outgoing, willful motivation, heat and expansion as well as the masculine; it is in essence Yang energy. ‘Tha' refers to the lunar, receptive, cooler, intuitive and feminine pole and is the same as Yin energy.

The practices of Ha-Tha Yoga then seek to balance this Yin and Yang energy, leading to a healthy, balanced way of being in the world.

Practices include physical ‘asana' practice as well as breathing practices and concentration and developing meditation.

What it does : These teachings lead to greater harmony within, as the Yin and Yang also the Ha and Tha aspects of our body, mind, feelings and spirit come into balance. As this balance and well-being arises, harmonizing and being more in tune with our lives and in the world can also arise. Additional benefits include improvement in physical health, emotional balance and a calmer yet deeper mental focus.

How we do it : This gentle but effective style of Yoga is suitable for those wishing to engage in softer practice, those with remedial needs and those whose temperament is not cut out for the more physically demanding Vinyasa based practices. These classes are also very suitable for those seeking a gentle introduction to the Art of Yoga.
Pre-natal Yoga
For Mums-to-Be
What it is : To keep in shape for labour, many expecting mums take on activities that focus on building strength and control. This inadvertently makes labor more difficult as childbirth is more of yielding, opening and softening.

Therefore, prenatal yoga, a blend of postures, meditation and breathing from the Hatha and Kundalini traditions, may be a more beneficial form of workout as compared to conventional forms of exercise. Although some asanas have to be modified during pregnancy, the essence of prenatal yoga is perfectly suited to this period of expanded self-awareness.

What it does : This is a gentle and safe workout for mums-to-be. Advantages include strengthened physical, emotional and mental preparation for childbirth, increased flexibility and muscle tone, heightened mental focus and endurance, increased mindfulness for pregnancy, birth and parenthood, diminished stress, and increased lung capacity for enhanced breathing. Many women who practice Yoga report their childbirth to be shorter, easier and a richer experience for themselves and their newborn child.

The prenatal yoga class offers an environment where expecting mums can interact and offer support for one another.

How we do it : Our classes will facilitate your adjustments to pregnancy, giving you a sense of integration and appreciation for you blossoming body. Learn the various techniques to manage pain for labor and walk away from a session feeling physically and mentally empowered.

Internationally renowned yoga authors & instructors conduct classes at our classes when they are in Singapore . Sign up now to receive our monthly e-newsletter for detailed profile of each resident & guest instructor and their class schedules.

A Word from the Founder….

2008 has began with a big bang (literally so to speak). After the Christmas and New Year festivities and holiday breaks regular students, some long lost souls and newcomers are back to yoga practice. Some renewed and some with renewed enthusiasm…but what really stands out and what we’ve always quietly known, is that it is not always about the place, the location, the name, the perks, the teachers….but a little bit of everything and more importantly what makes a difference is our attitude!

A smaller studio, smaller class numbers, dedicated teachers = personalized attention... At the end of the day this is what we are looking and hoping for. You don’t need to pay extra for a private class. What we all want is to make yoga a part of our life, but we need a guiding hand, not only to see and follow but to be noticed and assisted as and when required. We’re happy to admit that all our yoga teachers teach from the heart. Without this connection, you may as well go the gym for a physical workout!
